After losing our son, I returned to work fairly quickly. One of those days, I was walking through the hallways when I ran into an acquaintance. "Hey Jason, I heard what happened. I'm really sorry man. I know it's not the same, but my wife and I had a miscarriage a few years ago, so I don't know what you're going through but welcome to the shittiest club."
I didn't know what to say. I kind of shuffled my feet around and said the only thing that came to my mind; "At least there's a club."
As Welcome To The Shit Club: A male's perspective on stillbirth, grief, and loss is now available in paperback and Kindle, I've thought about this story a lot lately. Simple words that made me feel a little less alone. A club that no one wants to join, and yet, I'm glad that it exists.
The month of October is Pregnancy and Infant Month. Although the shit club is for all folks that have experienced loss, this month holds a special place in my heart. It's a topic that needs to be talked about more, especially given that 8 out of every 1000 births will be stillborn, and 1 in 4 will end in miscarriage.
That's one of the reasons that I wrote Welcome To The Shit Club. So that people will talk about it. So that others can realize that they are not alone in this awful club. So that we can continue to spread awareness and have conversations about these difficult topics.
Book Release
I'm not going to lie, it's been pretty emotional releasing this book. As you know, I've been sharing my story on various blogs and social media for a while now. However, when I share, it's typically a story or two that I'm sharing that brings light to the topic we're talking about. BUT, with a book, all of those stories, feelings, and vulnerabilities are in ONE place. And to be honest, I'm feeling like I've had a bit of a vulnerability hangover this weekend with the book releasing!
With that being said, I'm also very excited for you to be able to read it and hopefully have some takeaways of your own from that story that will be helpful in your own life.
Also, I need to say a massive THANK YOU to everyone who has already bought the book! We ended up hitting the top 10 in the Love and Loss category on Amazon, so that is pretty amazing!
I really hope that this book is a blessing to you and that it gives you room to think, reflect, and maybe even share your story.
If you've read the book, I would love it if you'd consider leaving a review for it, and let me know what you think! Send me an email to jason@jasondyk.com, or leave a comment below! I'd love to hear from you!
with gratitude,
Jason
